Rumors have been circulating about Jony Ive’s upcoming departure from Apple. On November 26, 2019, Apple made his exit official, by removing his presence from the leadership page. Although Jony has officially left the company, he will contribute on special projects in an advisory capacity.

As Tim Cook stated:

“Apple will continue to benefit from Jony’s talents by working directly with him on exclusive projects, and through the ongoing work of the brilliant and passionate design team he has built…”

In his absence, software and hardware design will be headed up by COO Jeff Williams. Don’t expect a noticeable decline in design quality due to Ive’s departure. Apple has numerous talented designers on the payroll, many of whom are protégés of Jony Ive.

Jony Starts New Design Firm LoveFrom

Jony’s new design firm, LoveFrom, already has one major client — Apple. Although he no longer works directly for Apple, Jony still designs Apple products. You’ll continue to see his work reflected in Apple products. In fact, the transition allows him to work on design, rather than manage an organization. Perhaps this was the impetus for change?

LoveFrom is a collaboration with designer Marc Newson. The company derives its name from something Steve Jobs once said, as recounted by Ive:

“…one of the fundamental motivations was that when you make something with love and with care, even though you probably will never meet . . . the people that you’re making it for, and you’ll never shake their hand, by making something with care, you are expressing your gratitude to humanity, to the species.”

Ive’s departure from Apple hasn’t seemed to affect the stock price. After all, he hasn’t really left Apple in the lurch. Beyond being a major influence on all designers, he’s still available to work on key projects. Many of us are waiting to see what Ive and Apple will accomplish in the future.
